What is a phase change material?

Phase change materials ( PCM ) are substances which can absorb a large amount of latent heat energy during its physical phase change process of melting and freezing. Many materials are naturally phase change materials. PCMs what we commonly refer are engineered phase change materials which are modified by additives for better nucleation and distribution.

Sensible heat is used in contrast of latent heat. It is the heat exchanged by a system in which the exchange of heat of the system. Specific heat is an important physical property of matter. The specific heat is the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree Celsius. 

To understand the concept of latent heat, we must first review phase changes. Phase changes refer to a change in matter from one state to another without changing its chemical properties.
